Hunter’s Point Shipyard Building 101 Upgrades

Located on 638 acres of waterfront in San Francisco’s Bayview–Hunters Point District, the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard was once a major U.S. Navy base that employed over 8,500 civilians in the 1950s. Decommissioned in 1974 and officially closed in 1991, the site has since been transformed into the largest artist community in the United States, now home to nearly 300 working artists.

As part of this evolving creative campus, Arana Group was selected to renovate the former administration building to support its adaptive reuse as a public art gallery. The project focused on converting a decommissioned auditorium into a modern exhibition space while preserving key architectural elements and bringing the facility up to current life-safety and accessibility standards.

Scope of Work

• Auditorium Conversion
  Architectural and MEP upgrades to convert the existing auditorium into a functioning art gallery space.
  
  
• Restroom Modernization
  Combined two existing restrooms into a single multi-user, all-gender restroom with new plumbing, lighting, and ADA-compliant upgrades.
  
  
• Accessibility Enhancements
  Installed a new ADA-compliant ramp at the main entrance and wayfinding signage for accessible routes.
  
  
• Life Safety Upgrades
  Replaced outdated sliding fire doors with accessible-rated fire separation doors; removed wooden fire escapes and installed non-combustible, code-compliant egress stairs; added new exit and life safety signage.
  
  
• Building Infrastructure
  Installed new LED lighting, electrical heating and water heating systems, and constructed new storage and utility rooms. Included path-of-travel upgrades triggered by the renovations.
